SPAR Swiss Epic 2022 Routes (Stage 1-5)
Swiss Epic 2022 is happening in Graubünden, Switzerland and the route explores the breath-taking trails as it traverses the Alps from Arosa, to Laax before concluding in the now traditional finishing in the Race Village of Davos.
Here’s the overview or the routes from Stage 1-5.
Stage 1 – SPAR Swiss Epic 2022
The opening stage of the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic just scrapes the surface of the of the depths of riding on offer, but includes the very best of the local singletracks. Having twice before teased with sections of the Hörnli Trail, the 2022 edition includes the full 6.8 kilometres and teams will race from the summit, at the Hörnli-Express mountain station 2,482 metres above sea level, to the foot of the trail, nearly 600 metres lower in elevation.
Stage 1 also includes two close encounters with the four brown bears of the Arosa Bear Sanctuary and a race across the lunar landscape of the Sandböden. Stage 1 is, without doubt, one that’ll be remembered for years to come.
Stage 2 – SPAR Swiss Epic 2022
Stage 2 of the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic features both the highest point in the 2022 race as well as the race’s longest descent that passes the lowest point of this year’s edition, meaning teams will have to prepare for stage that tests limits but rewards with thrills aplenty.
The Urdenfürggli, a bridleway which dates back to the fourteenth century, dominates the opening 15 kilometres. From the summit, an 8-kilometre-long trail drops into Lenzerheide, the home of Switzerland’s mountain biking World Cup XCO and Downhill tracks. More descending then follows, criss-crossing the Landwasser river towards Graubünden’s administrative capital, Chur. The final 30 kilometres of the stage require a climb through the Rhein Gorge – a real sting in the tail.
However, the views of the turqoise waters of Lake Cauma, set in an emerald forest straight from a Brothers Grimm fairy-tale, provide a fitting finale to a marathon day.
Stage 3 – SPAR Swiss Epic 2022
It is a singletrack-filled day of trail exploration below the tree-line that kicks off with The Track, from Falera to Ladir.
The route then descends past Ilanz’s Dominican Convent and follows the Rhein downstream in search of an easy crossing of the Rheinschlucht. Climbing then recommences past landmarks like Lake Cauma, as well as the villages of Fidaz and Alp Foppa. The climb to Startgels is gradual, but, sadly, there will be no time for a five-course meal at Ustria Startgels before dropping into the Runca Trail – one of Europe’s longest flow trails and an International Mountain Bicycling Association award winning singletrack to boot. Most of the final 10 kilometres are downhill and more than half of them are on the Runca Trail, meaning that speed and excitement are the final order of the stage before kicking back and relaxing in the race village.

Stage 4 – SPAR Swiss Epic 2022
Deep forests and the pale sheer cliffs of the Rheinschlucht offer an early taste of the spectacular scenery to come, before a river-side path provides easy riding through Domleschg Valley. Having descended for over 30 kilometres, the climbing begins with the Alter Schin, a historic footpath carved into the rockface high above the cascading Albula River. The Wiesner Viadukt, the highest bridge on the old Rhaetian Railway, then provides an entrance into the Zügen Schlucht trails. These trails were made famous by Danny McAskill in his Home of Trails video and take teams on an exciting section of stunning cliffs, ancient bridges and tunnels. Near the highest point of the stage the route passes the Junkerboden, immortalised by the art of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, before gradually descending into Davos where tired legs and bodies can recover ahead of Stage 5 and the final demands of the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic.
Stage 5 – SPAR Swiss Epic 2022
The final 58 kilometres of the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic packs as many of the famous Trails Paradise Davos singletracks as possible to ensure that the 2022 event ends of the highest of highs. The stage is a compacted Bahnentour, without the ski lift assists, taking in many of the legendary tour’s best-loved trails. These include the Panorama, Gotschnaboden, Drusatscha, Flüela, Ischalp and Bolgen Trails. Each is unique. From the undulating and scenic Panorama to the rooty Gotschnaboden and natural Flüela. The fast-flowing Drusatscha and final Bolgen will fight for the riders’ favourite status on the stage, but the real victor will be the finishers. With the Alps conquered, the celebrations will be hard-earned and they will ensure that the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic lives on in memory for years to come.
